Some Terrestrial Tarantulas That Will Burrow
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.День назад
For years, we were told that "terrestrial" tarantulas only require a few inches of substrate and hide to be happy. However, the longer I've kept, the more species I've discovered that seem to like to dig almost as much as fossorials even as adults. In this episode, I'll show off some of the terrestrial species that I keep that do a good deal of burrowing. Tom's Big Spiders Website: tomsbigspide...

In 2019, I put together a video featuring some of my more colorful tarantula species in hopes of giving hobbyists a way to prove to their friends and families that tarantulas COULD, indeed, be beautiful. Was thinking of an idea the other day of somehow constructing a liquified feeder pulp like a cricket smoothie for tarantulas to drink after a moult rather than sucking the juice out of their moults for more of a chance to get an intact moult and also benefit the spider with nutrients which i think would help them harden up after a moult

    Hi Tom! Awesome video as always! Your blondi is stunning! Unfortunately I got full haired in the face, eyes, and throat by my apophysis male and those three days of hell were enough for me to not keep Theraphosa. It's mass rehousing weekend and I knocked out 5 today. Everyone was very well behaved, thankfully. Also, my Pseudhapalopus sp. Columbia moulted and has its adult colours- absolutely stunning! Definitely going to have to get that one in a new enclosure as well. Also, funny little story for you. I had a fake plastic skull in with my Queen for ages for decoration. She recently decided she didn't like it and threw it in her water dish. It made me think about the ping pong balls since it was the same general size, shape, and material, and she just said "absolutely not." Hope all is well with you! Keep up the awesome work! - Charlotte

    Hey Tom. Hope you and the family are all good. I loved this video and I now have two stirmi slings and I’m amazed at how lanky they are lol and yes, super fast at the slightest touch of the enclosure. It’s great to see you’re using the reptile growth enclosures because they are awesome and very well priced for what they are and I’m pleased to say we can actually get these easily in the uk so they’re my go to enclosure now. I’m a great fan of the BBS ( Big Brown Spider) and my stirmi are top of my list now together with all my LPs and curly hairs. All the best bud.

    What a wonderful video. Thanks Tom. Could you please let us know how you heat your room or your enclosures? Do you use heat mats/ heat strips or use a room heater? Do you advise using heat mats on their own, or use heaters to warm the room up to a comfortable room temperature without the need for heat mats? Perhaps if you could do a video showing folks how you keep your room and enclosures warm for winter time?

      Hi, Stuart! I have a room above my garage with its own heat. I keep the temp set at 73 in the winter. At my old house, I used an oil filled portable heater to raise the temp in the room a couple of degrees. I find it safer to heat the entire room than to try to heat individual enclosures. What are your temps (inside) in the winter time?

      @@TomsBigSpiders hi Tom. Thank you for the feedback and help. I’m situated in South Africa and we in winter at the moment. We do have rather cold temperatures at night lately and outside temperatures around 4 degrees celcius and I keep my spider room heated with external heat lamps at a temperature of between 21-23 degrees celcius. I have around 80 tarantulas so I’m so glad you confirmed my suspicions on heating by rather heating the room than using heat strips. The spiders are eating a bit during winter and have even had a few molt, which I assume means the spiders are happy? I must be completely honest Tom, I’m a huge fan of your content and is my favorite tarantula channel on RUclips. Here in South Africa we don’t have many RUclips channels, and I would be honored if you wouldn’t mind looking at my channel and subscribing if you mint mind. I use Ready 2 Use clear storage bins from Staples (as Dave's Little Beasties uses) and I use the 64 litre for my Theraphosas. As the climate here on the prairies in Canada is bone dry (especially in winter), i had to put them in these large containers even when they were slings/juveniles as my T Blondi had a bad molt in a smaller enclosure (could not keep it moist enough).

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders 15 часов назад

      I've used similar sized plastic bins myself - I have some ziploc ones that worked great. It gets cold here in the winter as well, and the heat dries out the air, but I run a humidifier and I've never had an issue with the slings or juveniles drying out if I give them deep sub. Tom, so what I'm hearing is that these are not fossorial tarantulas, but rather semi-fossorial tarantulas. And I say this deliberately, knowing the chaos and cosmic entropy it has the potential to cause within the tarantula community. 🤗 To be clear, I will always push back on the people who complain about the "semi" terms being used to describe various tarantulas' ideal enclosure setups. The way I figure it, if some people can't take a few minutes out of there lives to think about and understand these terms and how they apply, then those people have no business keeping tarantulas in the first place and at the risk of sounding elitist, I will never worship at the altar of expanding the hobby if it means catering to people who are too stupid to understand something as simple as "semi-arboreal" etc.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders 15 часов назад

      STOP IT, BRIAN. You KNOW what you're doing!!! BAHAHAHAHAHA Yup, I agree completely. I've actually had people email me to tell me that I "need" to stop using the term "semi arboreal" to describe tarantulas because people are putting their spiders in super deep enclosures, and I'm helping to "kill tarantulas". Excuse me, but it's not my fault that people can't understand what I'm explaining. I always give the specs for the enclosures that I'm putting my "semi arboreal" spiders into. Do they not pay attention to that part? So irritating! Such is my life...haha Hope all is well!

      Hi, Megan. You may be able to get away with misting for slings in smaller enclosures, but it doesn't work with larger, moisture-dependent specimens. Many need to burrow, and they burrow to get to moisture. It helps to keep them from loosing too much moisture from their book lungs. In the winter time especially, misted enclosure dry out very quickly leaving the spider with no way to stay properly hydrated. So, no...I would not advise that.

    A great video, as usual! I adore the theraphosa species, but think that they are best left in your confident and experienced hands. Would I love to have one or all of them? Absolutely! Just not yet. Thanks. The experience I get from watching and learning from you is immeasurable!

      Hey, if you ever decide to get one, let me know! :) They're not as bad as some make them out to be. :) Thank you!

    Hey man, your talking about not liking to feed your (probably pregnant) big female dubias, you should get a madigascar hisser colony. That’s what I feed my big guys, and they all love them!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders 15 часов назад

      Yeah, I used to feed hissers off from my colony, but I stopped. I keep them as "pets" now, because I always felt bad for them. haha

    Love Theraphosa, although just sent my MM Blondi to a breeder. He was rattling around his enclosure every evening looking for a female, so sent him off to fulfil his destiny 😊. He was quite a friendly BFT. Miss him.

      Sorry to bend your ear like this , but I m going to anyway . Just rehoused the Apo . Didn't kick a hair . Took the aquarium outside and dumped the substrate on a stump in the yard . Scraped it out with a spatula . (Don't tell my wife) Bleached and rinsed the house well . Rebuilt it with all new things . Cork bark , hide , plants ... The girl went in without a hitch . That's when I started itching ...

    Although I'm not keeping them anymore ( the Hairs) I still like them. And they are not just big and brown. Espacially T.blondi is showing burgendy red Hairs on the Legs, the Abdomen has a fine silken sheen and sometimes at the right angle of the light the legs can almost look white. And the Stridulation is just as impressive as the whole Spider.

      Hey, Mike! So far, I'm lucky that the hairs don't bother me that much (unlike Xenesthis sp., which I'm more sensitive to). And I think that Billie did a great job getting some of the more subtle colors to show up. There are definitely some pinks and even purples on the apophysis. Thanks for chiming in.
